SUPPORTING CHANGE

Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of immense suffering, death  and a serious public health burden to society today.

Nearly 5 million people die PREMATURELY each year from smoking related diseases globally  and countless millions are DISABLED and their quality of life is destroyed through permanent health damage. Almost half are affected in their prime.

In the UK nearly 100,000 people die prematurely each year from a tobacco related illness. This death toll is more than the combined death toll  due to motor accidents, violent crime and suicide. We cannot place a loss of value on or measure the suffering, disability and diminishing of quality of life of those who survive tobacco use related heart disease, cancer treatment, lung disorders and strokes.

Since the 1st of July 2007, the whole of the United Kingdom has become smoke-free. The Health Act 2006 gave us the opportunity to start afresh by banning smoking in public and workplaces, restaurants, pubs, bars, shisha cafes and public transport-including multioccupancy cars and vans used at work.

We support the ban and would like to see a smoke-free Europe. Support us by respecting the ban and take this opportunity to stop smoking for good.  Make your building, business and community smoke-free.

We also support the World Health Organisation's MPOWER initiative and urge communities to Monitor tobacco use in their area; Protect people from tobacco smoke (especially children in the home and car); Offer support to smokers to quit; Warn users and non-users about tobacco and health; Enforce tobacco advertising, promotion, under age sales and other bans; and, Raise tobacco  taxes
